I love painting still lifes. And doing this one made me quite happy in a dark and gloomy time in the world. I didn’t arrange a pot with flowers, but I was inspired by something similar in one of the Dutch museums*. So I painted this purely from memory. The flowers and the pot are imaginary. Only the orange lanterns were real, they were in a bouquet that was given to me. I chose warm colours, as a counterweight against the November cold.
* Singer Museum? I can’t remember the name of the painting, nor the painter. If you recognise anything, please let me know!
